a modern pop-up flea market

So the Vintage Bazaar is just three days away.  Today and tomorrow putting the finishing touches of the design elements on our booth.  And making soup (probably) and getting really really excited.

If you don’t have enough reasons to be pumped to check this thing out, then hear ye hear ye!  For we have checked in with some of the sellers and this shit seems downright notable.

We sent out a few lil interview questions and were impressed and excited by what came through the pipe and we hope you will be too.  In fact we got so many responses (and such good responses) that we’ll be splitting this up into two articles….    Check it:

the FOUND

Albert Tanquero from the FOUND checked in with us and let us know a bit about what’s up:

Team H: What is your shop all about?

I specialize in vintage photography and my partner and I have a small company with greeting cards, journals, magnets and other products. I sell at different antique markets, on eBay and directly off our site.

Team H: Most excited about this weekend?

In terms of this weekend, I am most excited about interacting w/different vendors and customers. Its always interesting to see how customers react to products and items in my booth. Vintage is finally getting the attention it deserves and the creative energy of the vendors and the buyers will be amazing!!! I love seeing peoples reactions to our mug shot greeting cards. They either love it or hate it.

Team H: Fave types of items to sell?

My favorite items to sell have to be my vernacular photographs. I dig through boxes at flea markets, antique shops and estate sales to find images that are interesting or compelling. I only sell photos that have something quirky, unusual or beautiful. It’s great to hear how people repurpose photos into their artwork or to simply add to their collection. Vernacular photography is finally getting elevated to a form of “art”. So many wonderful snapshots were simply thrown out but now people are collecting them. They’ve even made it into national museums and galleries.

I will be selling photos, vintage mug shots, greeting cards, buttons, vintage signs and letters and other oddities I’ve come across in the last few months.

Team H: Thanks Albert!

Pretty. Quirky.

LaraJo is comin up to the Second City all the way from Arkansas and if her handsome photoblog has anything to say about it, we are in for a real treat.

Team H: What are you excited about selling? What else you excited about?

I have a booth in Arkansas, where I’m from, but I am going to be interested in seeing what sells here that doesn’t there and vice versa. I think I’m mostly excited to bring my bigger pieces, like the furniture — I don’t have anything really big, but a few smaller pieces of furniture that I’ve tried to breathe a little new life into. My booth is too small for anything bigger than a chair, so selling bigger pieces will be a new experience for me.

And I am really excited to meet all my fellow Chicago bloggers. That may be the most fun part of this whole deal!

John from STUDY LLC rocks a tumblr (holla!) which is way cool and at studyllc.com you will find some thoughtful stuff about material culture.  V. v. cool…

Team H:  what you are most excited about come saturday?

The format of this event is especially appealing (the fact that it’s affordable vintage) as it’s made our recent scouting efforts even more fun/challenging. You really want to find all the quality for a reasonable price and as we all know in the vintage world, that’s just not always the case. But after a lot of editing, we think we’ve found a nice mix of home furnishings – all under $100 and most under $40 – to offer up to attendees.

Team H:  what items you are most excited to be sellin?

Somehow or another we’ve amassed quite the vintage kitchen section which isn’t usually our thing but has really grown on us. We also have a great mid-century blue and white tiled side table that we think may be the favorite of a few people.

Team H:  what items you love so much you hate to part with it but hey you gotta do what you gotta do?

We recently stumbled on a trove of vintage Heritage Press illustrated novels and since we are nothing if not suckers for pretty books, we’re awfully broken up about parting with these. What’s that saying though… kill your darlings? Yeah, these books would definitely be ours.

Amy from the hilariously named Schmoo 1515 checked in and sent us a few promo photos as well.  Nice!  Her etsy shop is also worth a look it is obvious she has a curatorial eye, and the cohesive photo aesthetic throughout the shop is v. nice as well.  Sadly, we forgot to ask her about what her etsy store name means, but I guess that’s something yall can do come Saturday now innit!

Team H: What’s good? What are you gonna bring?  What are you excited about?

Everything in my shop will be coming with me to the bazaar plus tons of inventory that I never got a chance to list on etsy. I am really excited for the chance to meet other sellers and of course sell tons of awesome vintage clothes.

Team H: What about rompers?

I have tons of rompers that I love soooooo much, but I am 5′11″ and I can’t wear any of them :( they were not designed for tall girls!

Team H: A little bird told us you were thinking outside of the box…  Anything up your sleeve?

I am going to have make your own button station which will be fun and interactive… lots of vintage papers to choose from OR draw your own design and make it a button!
