I have had the honor of designing and constructing veils for 5 of my closest friends/family in the past couple years.  I learned a few basic techniques in design school and went from there.  Even though most bridal boutiques sell standard veils, I feel they should typically be more custom made.  There are so many different shapes, styles and trim that go into a veil.  Each bride is a different height, places it in a different part of her hair, has a different style, etc.  A veil for the ceremony and a different one for the reception is always a nice idea too.  Here are a few that I designed recently, and of course there are more to come!  Please contact me (theheliopsis@gmail.com) if you are looking for a custom veil.  I would be happy to help you out!

What kind of veils have you been noticing at weddings lately?

Tap Shorts.

A little history of costume lesson for all my readers out there:

The name ‘tap shorts’ or ‘tap pants’ originates from shorts worn by tap dancers while practicing their routines.  Tap shorts are a form a lingerie worn by women and are most commonly manufactured using silk, satin, cotton voile or lace.  Throughout the past couple decades, designers have translated the concept of tap shorts into outerwear.

I designed two different pairs so far.  The fit and fabric are just a little different on each pair.

The first pair I made, was cut from a vintage dress (see picture below).  There is a 1.5″ waistband with elastic, which creates a nice flowiness to the garment.  Styled here with a You Babes sweater and brown braided belt.

It was hard to choose just one look for these shorts, so I tried a couple blouses as well.  The tap shorts can also be worn more casually with a t-shirt or tank top.

This is the vintage dress that I cut the shorts from.  They didn’t take up much fabric, so I  have enough of this dress to make a few more pairs.  I might incorporate it into a new dress design instead, though.  I guess you’ll have to wait and see!!

The other pair I made a little wider to form more loose gathers.  The waistband is about 2″ wide and instead of using elastic, I used a top made out of a heart printed cotton stretch.  The actual shorts are made from a paisley print remaindered fabric.  Styled here with a vintage black dancer tank (also for sale on our etsy shop)  The colors of these shorts are great for Fall, so I would suggest pairing them with a simple sweater and some brown boots for late summer/early Fall.

What do you all think of tap shorts?  How would you style them?

Team H is movin’ up!

So I never got that tripod for my birthday (womp, womp), but we did manage to save up some money to purchase the rest of the necessary camera equipment we needed.  To test everything out, we had a little photoshoot last week.  I have been designing lots of new items, all constructed from vintage clothing and/or remaindered fabric and now I can finally show you!  Here is a little preview of both new designs and vintage items, but check the blog in the next week to hear more about each garment.

I heart grandma florals.

My fabric shears and sewing machine have definitely gotten use this week.  snip, snip, snip!  It has been so fun to create new designs with the limits of using other clothing to work with.  At times I need to think fast in order to ‘make it work’ (in the words of my hero, Tim Gunn) by improvising with extra seams or changing fabrics, but it makes the finished garment that much more exciting!

Remember this skirt?  I’ll admit that this skirt is actually from Talbots and I tend to love Talbots clothing in thrift stores….just wanted to get that off my chest…

Anyway,  the moment I spotted the skirt, I knew exactly what I wanted to make.

BEFORE:

I was inspired by the buttons down the front along with the fabric, which is a beautiful color combination of plaid and a seersucker texture.  This dress will soon be available to purchase at our etsy shop (along with other colors and sizes).

AFTER:

I don’t have any before pictures of this dress, but to paint a little picture, it was made from two different a-line vintage skirts.

Please forgive my self-portrait photography.  I realize each photo slants a bit to the right, but it’s only because my tripod consists of a pile of books.  eehhemm, my birthday is coming up…

Anyway, here is a closer look.  I had a lot of great feedback from customers at the Bonanza Vintage Sale, so I am in the process of making more of the same dress in other fabric combinations and sizes.

Next up, I’m working on transforming this sad moo moo into something a little more appealing and chic.

I love the print on the fabric:

As always, feel free to leave feedback.  I’d love to hear opionions, suggestions, and garments you want to see more of!

Team H is looking for an intern.

We have a bunch of shit on our plate. We need someone to help out w some of the detail work.

This is not your go get me coffee type of internship. You’ll be throwin in on everything from posting articles up on the site, throwing a hand in on our live events, researching vintage fashion labels and garments, assisting with photo shoots, merchandising, assisting with production of new fashion lines, making swatchbooks, jobbing fabrics, and more more more

Basically assisting two Chicago fashion hustlers with the things they are doing to build out their business.

We are non-pretentious, hard working entrepeneurs. We wanna work with likeminded ppl. We operate out of the wicker park / bucktown area.

3-4 month internship, unpaid, looking for 10-15 hr. per week of your time. Unlikely we’ll be able to offer a job job after that, but who knows. If you are a college student, we can likely hook you up with some college credits let’s talk about it. And if it works out you can count on a solid ref. and an interesting story(ies) for the cover letter for your next job app.

If you are interested you are invited to check out our web presences (listed below) and get a sense of our style and check out the types of things that you would be working on… And then in turn if you maybe want to write a lil bit about how your know-how or interests line up. And plz include a resume. Thx!

Vintage throughout Chicago

When we first got into vintage sales I had no idea how big the market was here in Chicago.  Since February, we have been lucky enough to participate in at least one vintage sale event per month.  Not only are the sale events bumpin’, but there are so many great fashion shows and other events that are fun to attend.

Memorial Day Weekend I sold for two days at Berlin Night Club for the Bonanza Vintage Sale along with Joules Jewels Vintage, SisterMan Vintage, Bombshell Shocked Vintage, The Gaudy God, Kokorokoko, just to name a few.  Of course one of the best things about selling vintage at live sales, is being able to shop vintage!  I found this amazing floral Gitano shoulder bag in SisterMan’s booth.  I didn’t even realize till I got home that it matches the one suitcase I own.  How perfect!

Over the weekend, Kokorokoko had an amazing fashion show.  The clothes, of course were beyond hip and the styling and models were unbelievable.  One main refreshing difference I have noticed between high end fashion and vintage fashion is the attitude.  Vintage sellers have much more fun with their clothes, styling, fashion shows, etc.  In my opinion, that’s what fashion is all about – having fun picking out your outfit each morning!

For more photos, go to the SisterMan Vintage blog.

As far as vintage events throughout this summer goes, Team H has a few planned so far…

I will be styling a Second City Savvy shopping tour on June 26th, helping the shoppers modernize vintage clothing at Kokorokoko, Store B Vintage, Lenny & Me and Vintage Underground.

We will be traveling to Hartville, Ohio in an unmarked white van filled with remaindered fabric to sell at the Hartville Flea Market July 4th weekend!   We will be selling July 1st-3rd, so stop by if you happen to be in Hartville :)

Also, we will be proudly selling at the second Vintage Bazaar on August 22nd at the Congress Theater (in Chicago).

More details soon….

Enjoy the rain!

This vintage St. Denis 100% silk blouse went from 90’s music teacher blouse to stylish 2010 lady.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I recommend pairing the modified version with some high-waisted flared jeans or high-waisted denim shorts.

Now, for a hand sewing lesson:

There are various hand sewing techniques, but one of my favorites is the catch stitch.  It is one of the few hand stitches that is done from left to right and if done correctly, there will be no visible thread on the right side of the garment.  The catch stitch is commonly used to hem dresses, pants and blouses.  The neatness of the stitch depends on the even spacing of the thread and carefully catching only one or two fibers of the fabric from the right side.  Don’t forget to use your thimble!

A catch stitch was used to hem both the sleeves and the hem of this St. Denis blouse.

Next up:

I plan to turn this frumpy plaid seer sucker skirt into something magnificent!

Have a lovely holiday weekend!!

I will be selling at Berlin Nightclub for the BONANZA Vintage Sale today and tomorrow from 1pm – 7pm.  Stop by if you are in Chicago :)

I have some updates!

I shortened the pastel Morton Myles dress and couldn’t believe the transformation.  (The extra fabric from the dress went into our Bag O’ Fabric Scraps.)  Take a look:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I also restored the elastic in the sleeves. Good as new!

I am very excited about my next couple items.  I found this St. Denis 100% silk blouse.  I am slightly redesigning this piece, but not cutting it up completely.  Check out the fantastic print.

I couldn’t stop at just one jumper.  I love the red corduroy jumper, but this one is downright amazing.  Here is some stone-washed denim that you unfortunately cannot French cuff.

You can shop some of these styles next weekend (May 29th and 30th) at Berlin Nightclub, 954 W Belmont, from 1pm-7pm.

We are excited to be a part of yet another Vintage Sale!!  Memorial Day Weekend (May 29th – 30th) we will be selling at Berlin Nightclub next to Chicago’s biggest vintage vendors such as Kokorokoko, Knee Deep Vintage and The Sometimes Store.   Not only will we be bringing our finest summer picks of vintage clothing, but we’ll also be debuting upcycled designs by Team H which include summer dresses made from vintage clothing and modified vintage items for a more ‘modern vintage’ look.  For more info check the FB invite.

Time to get creative, people!!

We have been busy making and modifying clothes which has resulted in piles and piles of fabric scraps. They are big enough to use for many crafty projects such as quilting, making accessories, appliques, pieces of clothing, baby clothing….the list goes on! We thought instead of throwing away these amazing cuts of new fabric, vintage fabric and vintage clothing, we would give someone else the opportunity to get crafty with some scraps!

Bag o' fabric scraps collection

One package includes about a 2 lb 15″ x 10.5″ envelope full of scraps from our collection. You may also get trim, zippers, buttons, etc depending on which scraps you receive.  Available on our etsy page for $6.50.

Enjoy and tell us how your project turns out!
